{"id":354,"date":"2020-08-20T14:46:44","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T14:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.friendsforpets.co.uk\/dog-walking-blog\/?p=354"},"modified":"2020-08-20T14:46:44","modified_gmt":"2020-08-20T14:46:44","slug":"king-of-the-kongs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.friendsforpets.co.uk\/dog-walking-blog\/?p=354","title":{"rendered":"King of the Kongs&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Has your dog\nfinally worked out the trick to emptying the kong in record speed?&nbsp; Lexie has&#8230;&nbsp;\nOr do you find they get the main part out and quickly get bored with the\nrest?&nbsp; Lexie does&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I have done a\nspot of investigating and research to see how to stuff a kong like a pro!&nbsp; Apparently there are several stages to\nstuffing a kong, six to be precise \u2013 who knew?!&nbsp;\nSo I am going to impart my new found kong knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step one<\/strong> <strong>\u2013<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with a\nclean fresh kong (kind of obvious I know \u2013 but I thought I would take the\n\u2018idiots guide\u2019 approach, so forgive me if I offend you).&nbsp; So once you have throughly cleaned and\nremoved all leftover food from the kong you need to plug the small end.&nbsp; Peanut butter makes an excellent plug, simply\npush some up into the small hole (another helpful little tip \u2013 pop the kong in\nthe freezer for a couple of hours inbetween each step \u2013 it stops it all mixing\ntogether in a mess as you go).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step two<\/strong><strong> \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it\u2019s time to\nadd the gooey stuff to your kong.&nbsp; A few\nsuggestions I found were; peanut butter (the old faithful), Greek yoghurt,\ncottage cheese or the Kong Liver paste.&nbsp;\nSpread a decent layer inside the kong, trying to cover all three ribbed\nparts of the kong.&nbsp; If you have time\nagain pop it in the freezer for a few hours to solidify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step three<\/strong><strong> \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many dogs love a\nnice piece of fruit, so this is a great time to add some cut up apple, banana\nor blueberries.&nbsp; Great if you are trying\nto keep the calories low for your pup\u2019s daily treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step four<\/strong><strong> \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So step three was\ncounting the calories, step four is the time to add a few (it is a treat after\nall).&nbsp; So why not add some of your dogs\nfavourite treats, maybe some small cubes of cheese, some dog friendly sausage\nor some kibble.&nbsp; If your dog is fed\nkibble as part of its daily meal, then you could use some of their meal\nallowance in the kong, particularly if you are trying to watch their weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step five<\/strong><strong> \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now to get\nhealthy again&#8230;before we finish up with the kong let\u2019s add a few tasty\nvegetables too.&nbsp; Lexie loves a carrot, so\nwhy not chop up some chunks or sticks of carrot, broccoli or cucumber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step six<\/strong><strong> \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned in\nmy intro some dogs are masters when it comes to clearing out a kong in record\ntime, so a nifty little trick to make it last longer is to solidify all your\ningredients together by adding some water or stock.&nbsp; To make this easier, especially if you are\nfilling more than one kong at a time, it helps to stand all your kongs in a\nmuffin tray, pour over the water or stock and then put them in the freezer\novernight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And&#8230; Voila!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There you have\nit, a super tasty treat (which is also fantastic for the warm, hot days of\nsummer) which will keep your pup entertained for more than five minutes in the\nday!
